Laktaatitason refers to the concentration of lactate, a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism, in the blood or tissues of an organism. Lactate is produced primarily in muscle cells and red blood cells when oxygen supply is insufficient to meet the energy demands of cellular respiration. This process, known as anaerobic glycolysis, converts glucose into pyruvate, which is then converted to lactate in the absence of sufficient oxygen.

Under normal physiological conditions, lactate is continuously produced and cleared, with minimal accumulation in the blood. However, during strenuous exercise, conditions of hypoxia (low oxygen), or certain medical conditions like shock or sepsis, lactate production can exceed the body's capacity to clear it, leading to an increase in blood lactate levels, a condition known as lactic acidosis.

Measuring laktaatitaso is a common practice in sports medicine and clinical settings. In athletes, elevated lactate levels can indicate the intensity of exercise and help in monitoring training adaptation. In clinical settings, a high laktaatitaso can be a marker of tissue hypoperfusion and is associated with a poorer prognosis in critically ill patients. The normal range for blood lactate is typically between 0.5 and 2.2 mmol/L, though this can vary slightly depending on the laboratory and individual factors. Persistent elevations above this range warrant further investigation to identify the underlying cause.
