Lainaerä is a term used in Finnish finance to describe a single payment on a loan. The plural form lainaerien is used when referring to multiple such payments, for example in a repayment schedule. A lainaerä typically includes both interest and principal components and is paid at regular intervals, most commonly monthly.

In a standard amortizing loan, each lainaerä is part of a fixed repayment plan. The amount of the installment can be constant over the term (a fixed-rate amortizing loan), in which case the proportion of interest and principal changes over time: early installments contain more interest, while later ones contain more principal. There are also other repayment structures, such as equal principal payments (where the principal portion is constant and the total payment declines over time) and interest-only periods followed by principal payments. The chosen structure affects the borrower’s cash flow and the total interest paid.

Calculating a hata loan installment often uses the annuity formula. If L is the initial loan amount, r is the periodic interest rate (for example, monthly rate), and n is the number of payments, the periodic payment P is given by P = L * r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n). For a typical fixed-rate loan, this yields a constant lainaerä over the term, with the split between interest and principal shifting as the balance declines.

In practice, lenders provide an amortization schedule that lists each lainaerä, its date, and how much of it goes to interest and principal. This helps borrowers plan payments and understand how the loan balance evolves.
