Lagerfähig is a German term used in brewing and beer evaluation to describe beer that is suitable for lagering and can be stored for extended periods without quality deterioration. The concept covers the finished beer as well as the wort or blend intended for aging. Lagerfähigkeit implies that the product will benefit from or at least maintain its character when kept under cool conditions.

Originating from the words lager (storage, aging) and fähig (able), the term is closely linked to the practice of lagering, the cold maturation process traditionally used for many pale and amber beers. While common in Central European brewing, lagerfähigkeit can apply to other beer styles that exhibit clean fermentations and stable composition suitable for aging.

Several factors influence lagerfähigkeit: the quality and balance of malt and hops; the yeast strain and fermentation conditions (lager yeast typically fermented at low temperatures); the level of attenuation and final gravity; the beer’s oxygen content and exposure to light and heat; and the packaging and storage environment. Beers with strong oxidation risk or excessive bitterness can lose quality more quickly, reducing their lagerfähigkeit.

Brewers assess lagerfähigkeit through sensory tests and stability studies, sometimes including accelerated aging at elevated temperatures to predict shelf life. A beer marketed as lagerfähig signals that it is designed for aging and expects to develop or maintain balance over time under appropriate cold storage. However, actual shelf life depends on storage conditions; poor handling or exposure to unfavorable light or heat can shorten it despite initial suitability for lagering.
