The laboratory frame of reference, often abbreviated as the lab frame, is a fundamental concept in physics, particularly in mechanics and particle physics. It refers to a coordinate system in which an observer is at rest. This observer is typically considered to be stationary with respect to the Earth's surface or a commonly agreed-upon fixed point in space.

In this frame, the motion of objects is described relative to this stationary observer. For instance, if a ball is thrown, its trajectory and velocity are measured from the perspective of someone standing still and watching the ball. This is in contrast to other frames of reference, such as the center-of-mass frame, which is defined by the average position of all particles in a system.

The laboratory frame is often the most intuitive frame for everyday observations and experiments conducted on Earth. However, for certain theoretical considerations, especially those involving collisions or systems with inherent symmetries, the center-of-mass frame might be more convenient.
