Laattaruutu, also known as a *gridiron* or *football field grid*, is a term commonly used in Finnish to describe the rectangular markings on a football (soccer) field. These markings define the boundaries and key areas of play, ensuring standardized gameplay and fair competition.

The primary components of a laattaruutu include the penalty areas, the center circle, and the goal areas. The penalty area is a semi-circular zone in front of each goal, extending 16.5 meters from the goal line and 16.5 meters wide. Within this area, only the goalkeeper is permitted to handle the ball with their hands. The center circle, with a radius of 9.15 meters, marks the starting point for kickoffs and serves as a reference for the offside rule.

The goal areas, located within each penalty area, are smaller rectangles extending 5.5 meters from the goal line and 18.3 meters wide. These areas are used for throw-ins and corner kicks. The goal line itself is the boundary line where goals are scored, and the touchlines mark the sides of the field.

Laattaruutu dimensions are regulated by international football governing bodies such as FIFA, ensuring consistency across all competitive matches. The standard field length ranges between 100 to 110 meters, while the width varies between 64 to 75 meters, though these measurements can adjust based on the playing surface and venue.
