Lülitusallikad, also known as switching mode power supplies (SMPS), are electronic power supplies that use a switching regulator to convert electrical power. They are widely used in modern electronics due to their high efficiency compared to linear power supplies. The core principle involves rapidly switching a power semiconductor device, such as a transistor, on and off. This switching action, combined with energy storage components like inductors and capacitors, allows for voltage conversion.

Unlike linear power supplies which dissipate excess voltage as heat, lülitusallikad achieve voltage regulation by controlling the duty cycle of the switching element. This means the power is either passed through or blocked very quickly, minimizing energy loss. The frequency of this switching is typically in the tens or hundreds of kilohertz, which allows for the use of smaller and lighter magnetic components.

The main components of a typical lülitusallikas include a rectifier and filter to convert AC input to DC, a switching element, a transformer for isolation and voltage transformation, an output filter to smooth the switched DC, and a control circuit that regulates the switching process to maintain a stable output voltage. Different topologies exist, such as buck (step-down), boost (step-up), and buck-boost (step-up/down), each designed for specific voltage conversion requirements. The efficiency of lülitusallikad can often exceed 80-90%, making them an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for powering a vast range of devices from personal computers and mobile chargers to industrial equipment.
