One prominent example is flow injection analysis (FIA). In FIA, a liquid sample is injected into a continuously flowing carrier stream. This stream carries the sample through a reaction coil or mixing unit where it interacts with reagents. Finally, the product is detected by a suitable sensor, such as a spectrophotometer or electrochemical detector. The advantages of FIA include speed, low reagent consumption, and high sample throughput.

Another related technique is sequential injection analysis (SIA). SIA offers more flexibility than FIA by allowing for bidirectional flow and the precise aspiration and dispensing of sample and reagents in defined volumes. This enables the creation of more complex reaction sequences within a single instrument.

Online solid-phase extraction (SPE) is also a form of läpivirtaustekniikat, where a sample is passed through a solid-phase material to selectively retain analytes, which are then eluted and directly analyzed.
