Lähisyysilmaisin, sometimes translated as proximity sensor, is a device that detects the presence of nearby objects without physical contact. It typically works by emitting an electromagnetic field, a beam of light, or sound waves and detecting changes in the reflected signal. The object's presence interrupts or alters the emitted signal, which is then interpreted by the sensor.

There are several types of proximity sensors, each suited for different applications. Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects by generating an oscillating magnetic field. When a metal object enters the field, it induces eddy currents, which dampen the oscillation and signal the sensor. Capacitive proximity sensors can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects, including liquids and powders, by sensing changes in capacitance. These sensors create an electrostatic field, and any object entering this field alters the capacitance between the sensor's electrodes. Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light (infrared, visible, or laser) to detect objects. They can operate in various modes, such as through-beam, retro-reflective, or diffuse, depending on how the light is transmitted and received. Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the echo to return after bouncing off an object, thereby determining distance.

Lähisyysilmaisimet are widely used in industrial automation, robotics, automotive systems, and consumer electronics. Applications include object detection on conveyor belts, position sensing in machinery, collision avoidance in vehicles, and presence detection in automated doors or toilets. Their non-contact operation reduces wear and tear, making them reliable in harsh environments.
