Külmikukambrid, often referred to as cold rooms or walk-in coolers, are refrigerated spaces designed for the bulk storage of perishable goods. Unlike standard refrigerators, these are large enough for a person to enter, facilitating easier access and organization of inventory. They are crucial in various commercial settings, including supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, food processing plants, and warehouses.

The primary function of a külmikukamber is to maintain a consistently low temperature, typically between 0°C and 5°C, to slow down the spoilage of food items such as fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, and pre-prepared meals. This controlled environment significantly extends the shelf life of these products, reducing waste and ensuring food safety.

Construction of these chambers usually involves insulated panels, often made of polyurethane or polystyrene foam, which provide excellent thermal resistance. These panels are assembled on-site to create a custom-sized space. A powerful refrigeration system, including an evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve, is installed to circulate the cold air and maintain the desired temperature. Defrost cycles are also incorporated to prevent ice buildup on the evaporator coils.
