Külmaainegaas, also known as refrigerant gas, is a substance used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to absorb heat from one location and release it in another. These gases undergo phase changes, typically from liquid to gas and back again, to facilitate this heat transfer process. Common refrigerants include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and newer, more environmentally friendly options like hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants such as ammonia and carbon dioxide.

The selection of a specific külmaainegaas depends on various factors, including the application's temperature requirements, efficiency, safety considerations, and environmental impact. Historically, CFCs were widely used but were phased out due to their detrimental effect on the ozone layer. HCFCs, while less harmful, still contribute to ozone depletion and are being progressively replaced by HFCs. HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer but are potent greenhouse gases, leading to their regulation under international agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

Modern refrigeration technologies are increasingly focusing on refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP) to mitigate climate change. This includes the development and adoption of HFOs and the continued use of natural refrigerants, which have negligible environmental impact but may require specific handling procedures due to flammability or toxicity.
