Kötőszövet is the Hungarian term for connective tissue. Connective tissues are a type of biological tissue that supports, binds together, or separates other tissues or organs in the body. They are found throughout the body, connecting various structures and providing support, protection, and nourishment.

There are several types of connective tissue, each with specialized functions. These include loose connective tissue, which fills spaces between organs and muscles; dense connective tissue, which forms tendons and ligaments; adipose tissue, which stores fat; cartilage, which provides cushioning and support for joints; and bone, which forms the skeletal framework. Blood is also considered a type of connective tissue because it arises from mesenchyme and connects different parts of the body, transporting nutrients, oxygen, and waste products.

The primary function of connective tissue is structural. It provides the framework for the body, holding organs in place and connecting bones to muscles and to each other. Connective tissues also play a crucial role in defense, with some types containing cells that fight infection. They are essential for wound healing, repair, and the storage of energy. The composition of connective tissue varies, but it generally consists of cells, fibers (such as collagen and elastin), and an extracellular matrix. This matrix, often ground substance, fills the space between cells and fibers and can be fluid, gel-like, or solid.
