Kõhukelmepõletikuni, known in English as peritonitis, is the inflammation of the peritoneum, which is the thin membrane that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers the abdominal organs. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, most commonly by an infection. Bacterial peritonitis is often a complication of a ruptured organ within the abdomen, such as a perforated ulcer, appendicitis, diverticulitis, or a bowel obstruction. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis can occur in individuals with advanced liver disease, particularly ascites.

Symptoms of peritonitis typically include severe abdominal pain, which may worsen with movement or coughing, abdominal tenderness, bloating, and a rigid abdomen. Fever, nausea, vomiting, and a decreased or absent bowel sounds are also common. The severity of symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause and the extent of the inflammation.

Diagnosis involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection and inflammation, and imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans to identify the source of the inflammation. A sample of peritoneal fluid may also be taken for analysis.

Treatment for peritonitis usually requires prompt medical attention and often involves antibiotics to combat infection, and surgical intervention to address the underlying cause, such as repairing a perforated organ. In some cases, drainage of infected fluid from the abdominal cavity may be necessary. Peritonitis is a serious condition that can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated quickly and effectively.
