Kézfertőtlenítő refers to hand sanitizer, a liquid, gel, or foam used to kill or inactivate microorganisms on the hands. The primary active ingredient in most hand sanitizers is alcohol, typically ethanol or isopropanol, at a concentration of at least 60%. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are effective against a wide range of bacteria and viruses. They work by denaturing proteins essential for the survival of these pathogens.

While effective, hand sanitizers are not a replacement for handwashing with soap and water, especially when hands are visibly dirty or greasy, or after contact with certain types of germs like norovirus or Clostridium difficile. Handwashing physically removes dirt and germs, whereas hand sanitizer primarily kills them.

The use of hand sanitizer became particularly widespread with the emergence of public health concerns, such as pandemics, where maintaining hand hygiene is a key measure to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It is commonly found in public spaces like schools, hospitals, offices, and retail establishments, as well as in personal care products. Proper application involves rubbing the sanitizer over all surfaces of the hands until dry, ensuring complete coverage. Overuse or improper use, such as not allowing it to dry completely, can sometimes lead to skin irritation or reduced effectiveness.
