Képanyag can be produced specifically for a publication, licensed from stock libraries, or obtained from archives, agencies or freelance creators. It is typically stored in image libraries or content management systems and is managed with metadata such as captions, credits, dates, locations and keywords to aid search, retrieval and rights administration.

In practice, képanyag is acquired under different licensing models. Royalty-free licenses allow broad reuse under a one-time fee, while rights-managed licenses restrict usage by parameters such as duration, geography and edition. Creative Commons licenses may also apply, often requiring attribution. Ownership usually rests with the creator or the distributor, and usage rights must be respected, including model and property releases when people or private property are depicted.
