Käänteismenetelmä refers to an inverse method in Finnish. It is a broad term encompassing techniques used to infer unknown causes or parameters from observed effects or data. Instead of directly calculating an outcome from known inputs, an inverse method seeks to determine the inputs or underlying model properties that would produce a given set of observations.

This concept is widely applied across various scientific and engineering disciplines. For example, in geophysics, seismologists use inverse methods to deduce the Earth's internal structure by analyzing seismic waves that have traveled through it. In medical imaging, inverse problems are central to reconstructing images from scanner data, such as in CT or MRI scans. In engineering, it can be used to identify material properties or design parameters based on experimental measurements.

The core challenge in inverse methods lies in their inherent ill-posedness. Often, multiple different causes can lead to the same observed effect, making the problem of finding a unique solution difficult. Furthermore, real-world data is subject to noise and uncertainty, which complicates the inversion process. To address these issues, inverse methods typically employ regularization techniques to stabilize the solution and incorporate prior knowledge about the system being studied.
