Käytävävaunuissa, often translated as corridor carriages or saloon carriages, are a type of railway carriage design primarily used in Europe. The defining characteristic of a käytävävaunu is its central corridor that runs the length of the carriage, providing access to compartments on either side. This design contrasts with open-plan carriages where passengers are seated in a single large space.

Historically, the compartment system offered passengers greater privacy. Each compartment typically accommodated a small group of passengers, often four to six, and could be closed off from the corridor. This arrangement was popular for longer journeys where privacy and the ability to travel with a group were valued. The corridor itself served as the main thoroughfare for movement between compartments, as well as access to amenities like toilets and vestibules at the ends of the carriage.

Modern railway design has seen a shift away from the traditional compartment carriage in many regions, with open-plan layouts becoming more common. However, käytävävaunu-style carriages can still be found in operation, particularly on heritage lines, in certain types of trains like couchette or sleeper cars, or in specific regional services where their advantages of privacy and a more traditional travel experience are still appreciated. The design facilitates easier entry and exit from individual compartments and can provide a sense of intimacy for passengers.
