Käyttöoikeusryhmät, or access control groups, are a fundamental concept in information security and system administration. They are used to manage permissions and control who can access specific resources, such as files, folders, applications, or network devices. Instead of assigning permissions individually to each user, access control groups allow administrators to bundle users with similar access needs together.

By creating groups like "Sales Team," "HR Department," or "System Administrators," it becomes much more efficient to grant or revoke access. When a new employee joins a team, they can be added to the relevant group, automatically inheriting all the necessary permissions. Conversely, when an employee leaves or changes roles, removing them from the group immediately revokes their access, reducing the risk of unauthorized data exposure.

The principle behind using groups is the "principle of least privilege," which dictates that users should only have the minimum level of access required to perform their job functions. This principle, when implemented through access control groups, significantly enhances the security posture of an organization. It simplifies the management of user rights, reduces the potential for human error in assigning permissions, and provides a clear audit trail of who has access to what. Different operating systems and applications have their own mechanisms for defining and managing these groups.
