Käynnistystoimintoja refers to the processes and sequences initiated when a computer or electronic device is powered on. This initial phase is crucial for the device to become operational.

The process typically begins with the power supply unit delivering electricity to the motherboard. Immediately following this, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), which is stored in a non-volatile memory chip on the motherboard, takes control. The BIOS/UEFI performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) to check the essential hardware components such as the CPU, RAM, and graphics card, ensuring they are functioning correctly.

Following a successful POST, the BIOS/UEFI searches for a bootable device, which could be a hard drive, SSD, USB drive, or CD/DVD drive, according to a predefined boot order. Once a bootable device is found, the firmware loads the bootloader from that device into memory. The bootloader is a small program responsible for loading the operating system kernel.

The operating system kernel then initializes the rest of the system, including drivers for various hardware components, system services, and the user interface. This entire sequence, from powering on to the operating system being ready for user interaction, constitutes the käynnistystoimintoja. Errors at any stage of this process can prevent the device from booting or lead to system instability.
