Käynnistyskeino, often translated as "starting method" or "ignition method," refers to the process by which an engine is initiated into operation. This concept is particularly relevant in the context of internal combustion engines, where a spark or compression is needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The specific käynnistyskeino employed can vary significantly depending on the engine type and its intended application.

For gasoline engines, the most common käynnistyskeino involves an electric starter motor. This motor engages with the engine's flywheel, providing the initial rotational force to crank the engine. Once the engine reaches a self-sustaining speed, the starter motor disengages.
