Kynnöin is a fictional plant species described in the fantasy setting of Eldara, where it is associated with twilight forests and folklore. The name derives from the constructed Eldaran language, with kynn- signaling night and -öin indicating a flowering plant.

Description: Kynnöin is a woody shrub that can reach up to two meters in height. It has glossy, lanceolate leaves arranged alternately and bears clusters of bell-shaped flowers that glow faint blue to violet in low light, a bioluminescent effect attributed to a pigment called lumorin. Following flowering, it forms small seed capsules that release winged seeds in late autumn.

Habitat and distribution: The species is native to the temperate forests of Northreach in Eldara. It prefers shaded understories and acidic, well-drained soils, commonly growing along stream banks and forest margins. It is rarely found above about 900 meters in elevation.

Ecology: Kynnöin flowers attract nocturnal moths, with pollination most efficient under moonlight. The plant forms mycorrhizal associations with several fungi, aiding nutrient uptake in poorer soils. Seed dispersal involves small mammals and wind-blown capsules.

Uses and cultural significance: In Eldaran folklore, kynnöin is linked to protection during storms and is used in twilight ceremonies. Traditionally, some preparations are claimed to relieve minor pain and inflammation, though modern research is limited and parts of the plant can be toxic if improperly processed. Consequently, it is seldom cultivated outside ceremonial or ornamental gardens.
