The process typically involves simply piling organic materials in a designated area and allowing them to break down over an extended period, often a year or more.

Materials suitable for cold composting include garden waste like leaves, grass clippings, and small branches, as well as kitchen scraps such as vegetable peelings and coffee grounds. Larger items should be broken down into smaller pieces to facilitate decomposition. The key is to layer different types of materials, incorporating both "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like grass clippings) and "browns" (carbon-rich materials like dry leaves and cardboard) to provide a balanced diet for the microorganisms involved in decomposition.

Cold composting requires minimal effort. There is no need for regular turning or monitoring of temperature, though occasional watering may be beneficial during dry periods to maintain moisture levels. The primary advantage of this method is its simplicity and low labor requirement. However, the decomposition process is significantly slower than hot composting, and there is a higher chance of weed seeds and pathogens surviving due to the lack of heat.
