Kvartskapsler are a type of firearm cartridge, also known as quarter-actions or quarter-lock cartridges, that were previously used in certain types of firearms. These cartridges contained a substantially reduced amount of gunpowder compared to standard cartridges of the time, resulting in less power and a slower rate of fire.

The design of kvartskapsler is often attributed to the Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cartridges were specifically designed for use in metallic cartridge rifles, such as the Bofors 29/40, which featured a unique quarter-action locking mechanism.

Kvartskapsler ammunition was loaded into a standard-length cartridge case and contained a reduced charge of smokeless powder. The smaller charge produced less pressure and a slower rate of fire. The cartridges could be distinguished from standard cartridges by the presence of a quarter-action locking system in the rifle, which held the breech open after firing, allowing the operator to quickly and easily extract the spent cartridge.

In practice, kvartskapsler cartridges converted the Bofors 29/40 rifle into a semiautomatic or even single-shot weapon, given the need to extract the spent cartridge between each shot. Kvartskapsler were often used for hunting applications where full power was not necessary. However, due to their reduced power and slower rate of fire, they have largely fallen out of favor and are no longer widely produced.

Despite being an early innovation in firearms technology, kvartskapsler remain relatively unknown outside of specialty firearms circles, and their legacy is largely restricted to military and historical firearms enthusiasts.
