In quantum mechanics, a quantum state describes the condition of a quantum system. It encapsulates all the information that can be known about the system at a given time. Unlike classical physics, where a system's state can be precisely defined by measurable quantities like position and momentum, quantum states are governed by probabilities.

The mathematical representation of a quantum state is typically a vector in a complex Hilbert space, often denoted by the ket vector |ψ⟩. This vector, also known as the wavefunction, contains all the probabilistic information about the system's properties. When a measurement is performed on a quantum system, its state collapses into one of the possible outcomes, with the probability of each outcome determined by the wavefunction.

A fundamental concept related to quantum states is superposition. A quantum system can exist in a combination of multiple states simultaneously until a measurement forces it into a single definite state. For example, a qubit, the quantum analogue of a classical bit, can be in a state of 0, 1, or a superposition of both 0 and 1.

Another important aspect is entanglement, a phenomenon where two or more quantum particles become linked in such a way that their fates are correlated, regardless of the distance separating them. The quantum state of an entangled system cannot be described independently for each particle. Measuring the state of one entangled particle instantaneously influences the state of the others. Understanding and manipulating quantum states are crucial for the development of quantum computing, quantum communication, and other quantum technologies.
