Normalizing involves heating to a temperature above the critical point and cooling in still air, which refines the grain structure and produces a more uniform and desirable microstructure compared to annealing. Case hardening processes, such as carburizing or nitriding, are used to harden only the surface of a metal part while leaving the core relatively soft and ductile, providing wear resistance.
