Kuumahöyläys, or hot planing in English, is a pavement recycling technique used in road maintenance. It involves heating the existing asphalt surface to a pliable temperature using specialized equipment. Once softened, the asphalt layer is then removed or planed off by a cutting head. This process effectively grinds up the old asphalt surface, which can then be reused.

The primary purpose of hot planing is to remove deteriorated or uneven sections of the asphalt pavement. This includes areas with surface defects such as rutting, cracking, or ravelling. By removing these damaged layers, a smoother and more stable base is created for new pavement materials.

The material removed during hot planing is often recycled. It is typically collected, processed, and incorporated into new asphalt mixtures.
