A kutsukirje, meaning “letter of invitation” in Finnish, is a document issued by a host or inviting organization to invite a person to visit, participate in an event, or engage in a temporary stay for a defined period. It is commonly used in international travel and visa procedures, as well as in academic, professional, or personal contexts such as conferences, research visits, weddings, or family occasions.

In immigration and visa processes, a kutsukirje helps demonstrate the purpose of the visit, the planned duration, and the arrangements for accommodation or financial support. The letter can be required by consulates or immigration authorities to verify who is inviting the visitor and under what terms the stay will occur. It may also be requested for academic collaborations or employment-related visits.

A typical kutsukirje includes several elements: the inviter’s full name, address, contact information, and status (for example, citizen, resident, or organization). The invitee’s full name, date of birth or passport details, and relationship to the inviter are stated, followed by the purpose of the visit, the planned dates of stay, and the place of accommodation. The letter often specifies who will bear costs, guarantees housing or sponsorship, and may include a statement of responsibility to ensure the guest’s return. Sometimes supporting documents such as a copy of the inviter’s ID or residence permit are attached, and the letter bears a date, signature, and institution or organizational letterhead.

Note that a kutsukirje is not a visa by itself; visa issuance depends on a separate assessment by authorities. It may require translation, legalization, or apostille for international use.
