Kurkunpäätulehdus, also known as laryngitis, is an inflammation of the larynx, or voice box. This condition can cause a temporary loss of voice, hoarseness, or a raspy sound. The larynx contains the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound. When inflamed, these cords swell, interfering with their normal vibration and resulting in changes to the voice.

The most common cause of kurkunpäätulehdus is a viral infection, such as the common cold or flu. Other causes can include bacterial infections, although these are less frequent. Overuse of the voice, such as prolonged shouting or singing, can also lead to laryngitis. Environmental irritants like smoke, pollution, or dry air can also contribute to inflammation. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid irritates the larynx, is another potential cause.

Symptoms typically include hoarseness, a sore throat, a dry cough, and difficulty speaking. In more severe cases, a complete loss of voice may occur. Fever and swollen lymph nodes may also be present, especially if the laryngitis is due to an infection.

Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, a doctor may use a laryngoscope to visualize the larynx. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For viral infections, rest, hydration, and avoiding irritants are key. Antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections. Voice rest is crucial for recovery, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption is recommended. Chronic laryngitis may require further investigation to rule out other conditions.
