Kuolinpesä refers to the estate of a deceased person in Finnish law. It encompasses all the assets and liabilities that belonged to the deceased at the time of their death. This includes property, money, investments, and any debts or obligations.

Upon a person's death, their kuolinpesä becomes a legal entity. The management and distribution of the kuolinpesä are typically handled by the heirs. If the deceased has a will (testamentti), its provisions will generally guide the distribution process. If there is no will, the distribution follows the rules of intestate succession as defined by Finnish law, usually prioritizing the surviving spouse and children.

The process of settling a kuolinpesä involves several steps. First, an inventory of assets and liabilities is compiled. This is often followed by a formal distribution of the estate, known as jakaminen, which can be agreed upon by the heirs or carried out through a court-appointed executor if disagreements arise. Debts must be settled before any assets can be distributed to the heirs. The heirs are jointly responsible for the deceased's debts up to the value of the assets they inherit. The aim is to legally transfer ownership of the deceased's property and financial obligations to the rightful heirs.
