Kuhaistuminen is a Finnish term that describes the act of breathing in or inhaling air. It is a fundamental physiological process essential for life, allowing for the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide. This involuntary action is controlled by the respiratory system, primarily the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which work in coordination to expand and contract the chest cavity.

The process of kuhaistuminen begins with the inhalation phase, where the diaphragm contracts and flattens, while the intercostal muscles lift the rib cage. This increases the volume of the thoracic cavity, creating lower pressure within the lungs compared to the external environment. As a result, air rushes into the lungs through the nose and mouth, down the trachea, bronchi, and into the alveoli.

In the alveoli, gas exchange occurs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin alveolar and capillary walls into the bloodstream, where it is transported to the body's tissues. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

The exhalation phase, also known as exhalation or expiration, is typically a passive process. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax, causing the chest cavity to decrease in volume. This increases the pressure within the lungs, forcing the air, now rich in carbon dioxide, out of the body. While exhalation is often passive, it can be made active during forceful breathing, utilizing abdominal and other accessory muscles.
