Kudosviljelyssä, often translated as tissue culture, is a method used in plant science and horticulture to propagate plants from small pieces of tissue or cells in a sterile laboratory environment. This technique allows for the rapid multiplication of desirable plant varieties, including those that are difficult to propagate by traditional methods like cuttings or seeds. It also plays a crucial role in plant breeding, disease elimination, and the production of genetically modified plants.

The process typically begins with the selection of a suitable explant, which is a small piece of plant tissue such as a leaf, stem, or root. This explant is then sterilized to remove any contaminants and placed on a nutrient-rich medium. This medium contains essential minerals, vitamins, sugars for energy, and plant hormones that regulate growth and development. Under controlled conditions of light and temperature, the explant proliferates, forming a mass of undifferentiated cells called a callus.

From the callus, or directly from the explant, plantlets can be induced to form. This often involves manipulating the levels of plant hormones in the medium to promote root and shoot development. Once the plantlets are sufficiently developed, they are gradually acclimatized to normal greenhouse or field conditions before being transplanted.
