Kudoshypoksiaan is the Finnish term for tissue hypoxia, a condition in which the tissues of the body receive insufficient oxygen to maintain cellular metabolism. It arises from problems with oxygen delivery, distribution, or utilization and can occur in various clinical settings.

Common causes include hypoxemia from lung disease or high altitude, anemia or abnormal hemoglobin, and reduced blood flow from shock or vascular occlusion. Impaired cellular use of oxygen may occur with toxins such as cyanide, while increased metabolic demand can outstrip supply.

At the tissue level, lack of oxygen forces cells to rely on anaerobic metabolism, leading to lactate production and potential cell injury or death if prolonged.

Clinical signs are variable and depend on the organs affected; general indicators include rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, confusion, and fatigue. Severe or prolonged tissue hypoxia can cause organ dysfunction.

Diagnosis involves assessment of systemic oxygenation (pulse oximetry, arterial blood gas), measurement of oxygen content and lactate, and evaluation for underlying causes using imaging and laboratory tests. Tissue oxygen tension measurements are used mainly in research and critical care settings.

Treatment focuses on correcting the underlying cause and supporting oxygen delivery: supplemental oxygen or ventilation, restoring perfusion with fluids and vasopressors when needed, treating anemia, and addressing metabolic acidosis.

Prognosis depends on the duration and severity of hypoxia and on the effectiveness of causal treatment. Kudoshypoksiaan is most commonly encountered in critical illness, respiratory failure, cardiovascular collapse, severe infections, and traumatic injuries.
