Kristálytörés, commonly referred to as crystal fracture, describes the process by which a crystalline material breaks or separates. Unlike ductile fracture, which involves significant deformation before failure, crystal fracture is characterized by a relatively brittle, clean break along specific crystallographic planes. This phenomenon is governed by the atomic arrangement within the crystal lattice and the strength of the bonds holding the atoms together.

When sufficient stress is applied to a crystalline solid, it can exceed the cohesive forces between atoms. In a perfect crystal, fracture would occur along planes of weakness, known as cleavage planes, where the atomic bonding is weakest. These planes are determined by the crystal structure. For example, in many ionic crystals, fracture occurs along planes that separate oppositely charged ions, minimizing the energy required for separation.

However, real crystals are rarely perfect. They contain defects such as dislocations, grain boundaries, and impurities. These defects can significantly influence the fracture process. Dislocations, which are line defects in the crystal lattice, can move under stress, allowing for some degree of plastic deformation before fracture. However, if the density of dislocations is low or if their movement is impeded, the material will behave in a more brittle manner, leading to crystal fracture. Impurities can also segregate at grain boundaries or within the crystal, weakening the material and promoting fracture along these altered regions. The rate at which stress is applied also plays a role; rapid loading tends to promote brittle fracture, while slower loading allows for more time for deformation mechanisms to operate.
