krimpkous

Krimpkous, in English heat-shrink tubing, is a flexible polymer sleeve used to insulate, protect, and seal electrical connections and cables. The sleeved portion shrinks radially when heated, forming a tight fit around a wire, connector, or assembly.

Most krimpkous is made of polyolefin that is cross-linked to improve shrink memory and mechanical strength; adhesive-lined versions exist for moisture sealing; colorless/translucent and black are common; other materials include fluoropolymers for higher temperature or chemical resistance. Typical shrink ratios range from 2:1 to 4:1 (larger sizes up to 6:1 in specialty products).

Dimensions are specified by the inner diameter before shrinking and the overall length; installation involves cutting a sleeve to length, sliding it over the area to cover, and applying controlled heat with a hot air gun or similar tool until the tubing contracts. Some designs employ an inner adhesive that activates on heating to create a moisture- and dust-tight seal.

Common applications include insulating and protecting electrical splices, bundling multiple conductors, providing strain relief, and sealing against moisture in automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. Advantages include electrical insulation, abrasion resistance, weatherproofing, and the ability to conform to irregular shapes; limitations include temperature rating, UV exposure, and potential degradation under harsh chemical or high-heat environments.

Krimpkous is widely standardized in many regions and is sold in a range of sizes and colors. It is typically considered a passive safety component in electrical and electronics design, chosen for reliability and ease of use.
