Kovametallikärkiä, also known as carbide tips, are cutting edges made from cemented carbide, a composite material composed of tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a metallic binder, typically cobalt (Co). This material is known for its exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and strength, making it ideal for high-performance cutting tools.

The manufacturing process for kovametallikärkiä involves several stages. Initially, tungsten carbide powder is mixed with cobalt powder. This mixture is then pressed into the desired shape of the cutting tip, often using a die. Following pressing, the "green" compact is sintered in a vacuum or inert atmosphere furnace. During sintering, the cobalt binder melts and binds the tungsten carbide particles together, resulting in a dense and extremely hard material.

Kovametallikärkiä are widely used in various industrial applications, including metalworking, woodworking, mining, and construction. In metalworking, they form the inserts for turning tools, milling cutters, drills, and reamers. Their superior hardness allows them to cut harder materials and maintain sharp edges for longer periods compared to traditional steel tools. In woodworking, they are used for router bits, saw blades, and planer knives. The mining and construction industries utilize carbide-tipped drill bits for breaking rock and concrete.

The performance and longevity of kovametallikärkiä can be further enhanced by applying thin coatings, such as titanium nitride (TiN) or titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN). These coatings add an extra layer of hardness and reduce friction, leading to improved cutting efficiency and tool life. Despite their inherent toughness, carbide tips can be brittle and susceptible to fracture under sudden impact or excessive force.
