Kotitalousjäte, known in English as household waste or municipal solid waste, refers to the waste produced by households. This includes a wide range of materials such as food scraps, paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metals, and textiles. Proper management of household waste is crucial for environmental protection, public health, and resource conservation.

In Finland, where the term "kotitalousjäte" is commonly used, waste management practices are regulated by national and municipal laws. The primary goals are to reduce the amount of waste generated, promote recycling and composting, and ensure the safe disposal of residual waste. Source separation is a key component of Finnish waste management, encouraging residents to sort their waste at home into different categories.

Commonly sorted categories include biowaste (food waste), paper and cardboard, packaging waste (plastics, metal, glass), and residual waste. Biowaste is often composted or used for biogas production. Paper and packaging materials are sent for recycling. Residual waste, which cannot be recycled or composted, is typically incinerated for energy recovery or sent to landfills.

Residents are typically required to use designated bins and follow collection schedules.
