Kosteuslähteitä refers to sources of moisture. In building contexts, identifying and understanding moisture sources is crucial for preventing damage, mold growth, and ensuring healthy indoor air quality. These sources can be broadly categorized into internal and external.

Internal moisture sources originate from within the building itself. Everyday activities like cooking, showering, and breathing all release water vapor into the air. The number of occupants in a building directly correlates with the amount of internally generated moisture. Improperly ventilated spaces, such as bathrooms and kitchens, can trap this moisture, leading to condensation on surfaces. Plants also contribute to indoor humidity through transpiration.

External moisture sources come from the environment outside the building. Rain, snow, and groundwater are common culprits. Infiltration through the building envelope, such as cracks in walls, leaky roofs, or poorly sealed windows and doors, allows external moisture to enter. Rising damp, where moisture moves up from the ground through porous building materials like concrete or brick, is another significant external source, particularly in older buildings without adequate damp-proofing. Condensation on cold external surfaces, especially during periods of high indoor humidity and cold outdoor temperatures, can also be considered an external influence. Addressing all identified moisture sources is essential for maintaining a dry and healthy building.
