Korvatulehdys, also known as otitis, is an inflammation of the ear. It most commonly refers to otitis media, an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum. This condition is particularly prevalent in children, though adults can also experience it.

The primary cause of otitis media is often a bacterial or viral infection, frequently stemming from a common cold or upper respiratory infection. When these infections occur, fluid can accumulate in the middle ear. If this fluid becomes infected, it leads to inflammation and pain. The Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, plays a role; it can become blocked, trapping fluid and pathogens.

Symptoms of korvatulehdys can vary but often include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and temporary hearing loss. In children, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and tugging at the ear are common signs. Fever may also be present. A doctor can diagnose korvatulehdys by examining the ear with an otoscope, looking for signs of inflammation and fluid.

Treatment for korvatulehdys depends on the severity and cause. For mild cases, especially those caused by viruses, watchful waiting and pain relief might be sufficient, as the infection can resolve on its own. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections. Pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort. In recurrent or severe cases, surgical insertion of ear tubes may be considered to help drain fluid.
