Korkeusperäsin, also known as the elevator or stabilator in English, is a control surface on an aircraft's tail. It is typically attached to the horizontal stabilizer and is responsible for controlling the aircraft's pitch. Pitch refers to the upward or downward rotation of the aircraft around its lateral axis.

The korkeusperäsin is usually divided into two movable parts, the elevators, or it can be a single movable surface called a stabilator. When the pilot moves the control column or yoke, cables or hydraulic systems transmit the input to the korkeusperäsin. Moving the elevators up causes the tail to pitch down, resulting in the nose of the aircraft pitching up. Conversely, moving the elevators down causes the tail to pitch up, making the nose of the aircraft pitch down.

The primary function of the korkeusperäsin is to allow the pilot to control the angle of attack of the wings, which in turn affects the lift generated by the aircraft. This control is crucial for maintaining level flight, climbing, descending, and maneuvering the aircraft. In some aircraft, particularly gliders and some high-performance jets, the entire horizontal tail surface, including the elevators, is movable and is called a stabilator. This design can offer improved control effectiveness, especially at higher speeds. The proper functioning of the korkeusperäsin is essential for the safe operation of any fixed-wing aircraft.
