Korkeapainevyöhyke, often referred to as a high-pressure area or anticyclone, is a region in the atmosphere where the atmospheric pressure at the surface is higher than its surrounding areas. In the Northern Hemisphere, air within a high-pressure system typically circulates in a clockwise direction, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it circulates counter-clockwise.

These systems are generally associated with fair and stable weather conditions. As air sinks towards the surface within a high-pressure zone, it warms and dries. This process inhibits cloud formation and precipitation, leading to clear skies and calm conditions. Consequently, high-pressure systems often bring periods of sunshine and pleasant temperatures.

Conversely, prolonged periods of high pressure can sometimes lead to stagnant air conditions. This can result in the accumulation of pollutants near the ground, contributing to poorer air quality, especially in urban areas. In winter, a persistent high-pressure system can cause extremely cold temperatures due to the lack of cloud cover allowing heat to radiate away from the Earth's surface.

The formation and movement of high-pressure systems are influenced by global atmospheric circulation patterns, such as the Hadley cells and the jet stream. They can vary significantly in size and intensity, influencing weather patterns across large geographical areas.
