koridorer

Koridorer are long passageways within buildings that connect rooms, entrances, and different levels, providing the primary routes for movement. The term koridorer is Norwegian for corridors and is used to describe these spaces in both residential and public architecture. Corridors organize circulation, space, and access throughout a building.

Corridors vary in width and character depending on context. In apartments they link units to stairwells and elevators; in schools, offices, hospitals, and transit facilities they are designed to handle higher volumes of people and longer spans. Their design influences acoustics, daylight or artificial lighting, and maintenance requirements, with finishes chosen for durability and ease of cleaning.

Safety and accessibility considerations are central to corridor design. Codes typically specify requirements for egress, fire resistance, emergency lighting, signage, and unobstructed sightlines. Hospitals and other sensitive environments may feature separate patient or service corridors, tactile cues, and accessible widths to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Beyond function, corridors can reflect architectural style and planning ideas. In modernist and postwar architecture long, straight corridors were used to organize space and control movement, while contemporary designs may emphasize daylight, transparency, or intersecting routes around atria. Some buildings extend corridors into gallery-like spaces, where the passage itself becomes part of the experience of the interior.
