Koppellagen is a German term that translates to "legal couple" or "registered partnership." It refers to a legal framework established in Germany that grants same-sex couples rights and obligations similar to those of married heterosexual couples. The concept was introduced as a way to provide legal recognition and protection for relationships that were not recognized as marriage under German law at the time.

The registered partnership law was enacted in 2001, allowing same-sex couples to formally register their relationship with the state. This registration conferred various rights, including those related to inheritance, pension benefits, and the ability to make medical decisions for a partner. It also imposed certain obligations, such as mutual support and cohabitation.

While the registered partnership provided significant advancements for same-sex couples, it was distinct from marriage. For instance, it did not initially grant equal tax benefits or allow for joint adoption. Over time, these distinctions were gradually addressed through legal reforms.

In 2017, Germany legalized same-sex marriage, allowing all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, to marry and access the full rights and responsibilities associated with marriage. Following this, the registered partnership law remained in place for couples who had already entered into it, and new registrations were still possible for a period. However, the introduction of marriage equality effectively superseded the need for registered partnerships as the primary form of legal recognition for same-sex couples.
