Cooperatives can be categorized into several types based on their primary focus: consumer cooperatives, producer cooperatives, worker cooperatives, and hybrid cooperatives. Consumer cooperatives, such as food cooperatives, allow members to purchase goods at a lower cost by pooling their resources. Producer cooperatives, like agricultural cooperatives, help farmers pool their resources to increase efficiency and market power. Worker cooperatives, also known as employee-owned cooperatives, are owned and democratically controlled by their employees. Hybrid cooperatives combine elements of two or more types.

The cooperative movement has gained prominence in recent years due to its potential to address social and economic inequalities. Cooperatives often prioritize community development, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. They operate on the principle of "one member, one vote," ensuring that each member has an equal say in the organization's affairs.

Despite their benefits, cooperatives face challenges such as limited access to capital, competition from larger corporations, and regulatory hurdles.
