Koopolymerization is a polymerization process where two or more different types of monomers react together to form a polymer chain. This differs from homopolymerization, where only one type of monomer is used. The resulting polymer, known as a koopolymer, has properties that are often a combination of the properties of the homopolymers that could be formed from the individual monomers. The most common arrangements are random koopolymers, where the monomers are distributed randomly along the chain, and alternating koopolymers, where the monomers alternate regularly. Block koopolymers consist of long sequences of one monomer followed by long sequences of another. Graft koopolymers have side chains made of one type of monomer attached to a backbone made of another. The specific ratio of monomers and their arrangement significantly influence the physical and chemical properties of the koopolymer, such as its mechanical strength, thermal stability, solubility, and glass transition temperature.
