Konvensiyalar is a term used in many languages to denote both informal norms that govern everyday conduct and formal legal instruments known as conventions or treaties. The term encompasses both unwritten social norms and codified agreements between actors, typically states or organizations.

In social life, conventions are shared expectations that emerge from repeated interactions and help coordinate behavior. They are not laws, but they carry social pressure and may change over time or across cultures. Examples include forms of greeting, tipping, queuing, or protocol in meetings.

In international law, conventions (konvensiyalar) are formal agreements, negotiated and drafted through diplomatic processes and ratified by countries. Once in force, they create rights and obligations for the parties. They can address a wide range of issues, from humanitarian protection to trade, environment, and human rights. Some conventions codify customary international law, while others establish new rules. Enforcement varies, often relying on reporting, dispute resolution, and, in some cases, international courts and sanctions. Notable examples include the Geneva Conventions for the protection of war victims and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Beyond law, the term is also used in fields such as science, literature, and media to describe standard practices or formats—citation conventions, measurement units, or narrative conventions—that ensure consistency and clarity in communication.
