Kontrollisüsteemit, often translated as control systems, are arrangements of components that manage, command, direct, or regulate the behavior of other devices or systems. The fundamental purpose of a control system is to maintain a desired output by manipulating an input, often in response to external disturbances or changing conditions. This is achieved through a feedback loop, where the actual output of the system is measured and compared to the desired output. The difference, known as the error signal, is then used to adjust the input, thereby bringing the output closer to the desired value.

There are two primary types of control systems: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop system, the control action is independent of the output. For example, a simple timer that turns on a light for a set duration without checking if the light is actually on. A closed-loop system, also known as a feedback control system, utilizes feedback to adjust the control action based on the output. A thermostat regulating room temperature is a classic example of a closed-loop system.

Control systems are ubiquitous and find applications in a vast range of fields. They are essential in industrial automation for processes like manufacturing and chemical production. In aerospace, they are crucial for guiding aircraft and spacecraft. Everyday examples include cruise control in vehicles, automated climate control in buildings, and even biological systems like the human body's regulation of blood sugar.
