Kontekstispetsiifilisi, or context-specificity, is the property of a phenomenon whereby its outcomes, effects, or meanings depend on the situational context in which it occurs. The term is used across disciplines to denote that a response cannot be fully understood without reference to contextual factors such as environment, audience, task, time, or cultural setting.

In biology and medicine, context-specificity describes how gene expression, enzyme activity, or drug effects vary across tissue types, developmental stages, or environmental conditions. In linguistics and cognitive science, the interpretation of language and the retrieval of memories can be highly context-dependent, with different cues or discourse settings altering meaning and recall. In ecology, species interactions and ecological processes shift with habitat, season, and community composition. In social sciences and psychology, behavior, attitudes, and decision-making often hinge on social context and norms. In machine learning, model performance and transferability depend on data distribution and task context, affecting generalization.

Measuring context-specificity typically involves experimental or observational designs that manipulate or compare different contextual conditions and examine interaction effects between context factors and the primary variable of interest. Quantitative approaches include interaction analyses, context-sensitivity indices, and cross-context replication studies.

Context-specificity is related to, yet distinct from, generalizability and external validity. A high degree of context-specificity suggests limited applicability across contexts, while low specificity indicates broader relevance. Researchers emphasize distinguishing genuine context effects from confounding factors and avoid overgeneralizing findings beyond the applicable context.
