kontakmetamorfos
Kontakmetamorfos, also known as thermal metamorphism, is a type of metamorphism that occurs when existing rock is changed by heat from nearby magma or lava. This heat causes a chemical and physical alteration of the rock, forming a new type of rock called a metamorphic rock. The intensity of the metamorphism depends on the temperature of the intruding magma and the duration of the heating.
The zone of altered rock surrounding an igneous intrusion is called a metamorphic aureole or contact aureole.
Common examples of rocks formed through kontakmetamorfos include hornfels, quartzite (from sandstone), and marble (from limestone).
