kontainerid

Kontainerid are unique identifiers assigned to containers by container runtimes. They are used to reference containers in command-line tools, APIs and logs, and to correlate activity with the correct execution environment within a host or cluster.

In modern software deployment, containers provide isolated execution environments for applications. Runtimes such as Docker, containerd and CRI-O generate an ID for each container when it is created. In orchestration systems like Kubernetes, container IDs come from the underlying runtime and may appear with runtime-specific prefixes (for example, containerd:// or similar), alongside user-friendly names and labels.

Container IDs are typically opaque strings. In Docker, a container ID is a 64-character hexadecimal digest, with the commonly displayed short form being the first 12 characters. The long ID remains constant for the container’s lifetime, and IDs change if the container is removed and recreated. Across different runtimes, the exact format and length can vary, but the principle remains: the ID uniquely identifies a container instance.

Usage of kontainerid enables a range of operations, including starting, stopping, attaching to or inspecting a container, and retrieving its logs. They also help bind a container to associated resources such as networks, volumes and monitoring data. For readability and management, users typically rely on human-friendly names and labels, while IDs provide a precise, machine-readable reference for automation and auditing.
