A konsorsium is a temporary alliance of two or more independent organizations that join forces to undertake a specific, usually large-scale project. The arrangement is formed to combine expertise, resources, and financing that would be difficult for a single member to secure alone. Konsorsiums are commonly used in sectors such as construction, energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, mining, and research projects.

Key characteristics include a defined objective and duration, a konsorsium agreement that outlines roles, responsibilities, contributions, governance, and risk sharing, and a structured approach to bidding and project execution. Members retain their own legal identities, while liability and financial obligations are typically allocated according to the agreement. In many cases, a konsorsium does not create a separate legal entity; instead, it operates through contractual arrangements among the members. In some jurisdictions or for certain projects, however, a konsorsium may be formed as or converted into a separate legal entity to simplify contract signing and liability.

Formation and lifecycle usually involve tendering for a project, negotiating the konsorsium agreement, selecting a lead or coordinating member, and then delivering the project through joint planning and resource allocation. After project completion, the konsorsium dissolves unless the agreement provides for extensions or future collaboration.

A konsorsium is distinct from a joint venture in that the latter often results in a new, separate legal entity, whereas a konsorsium is typically a contractual alliance. Advantages include access to broader resources and risk sharing; challenges include complex governance, liability distribution, and potential conflicts among members.
