konditionaalimuodon

Konditionaalimuoto, or the conditional mood, is a Finnish verb mood used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, and polite requests. It has two time definitions: present conditional (konditionaalin preesens) and past conditional (konditionaalin imperfekti). The form is typically used in main clauses and in conditional clauses introduced by jos or other conditional markers.

In the present conditional, verbs are formed by adding the -isi- infix to the verb stem and attaching the usual personal endings. Examples with the verb mennä (to go) include minä menisin, sinä menisit, hän menisi, me menisimme, te menisitte, he menisivät. With tehdä (to do) the forms are minä tekisin, sinä tekisit, hän tekisi, me tekisimme, te tekisitte, he tekisivät. The present conditional is commonly used for hypothetical present or future situations and for polite requests, as in voitko auttaa? or voisitko auttaa? (could you help?).

The past conditional expresses hypothetical events in the past. It is formed with the conditional forms of olla (olisi, olisin, olisimme, etc.) plus the past participle of the main verb, or in some constructions with the appropriate auxiliary. Examples: jos olisin tullut (if I had come), hän olisi tehnyt (he would have done), olisin tehnyt (I would have done). This usage conveys counterfactuals about past events.
